Towing at Max

Brand new to camping and travel trailers, but not towing.

Wife decided we are going to start camping... so you know what happened next.

'07 Dodge Charger, and based on a unique configuration, which I have, rated at 3800 lbs, with a 200 lb tongue weight limitation. My automotive engineering eye tells me the hitch configuration (vertical receiver) is why there's a tongue weight limitation.

So, we bought a used 19' Trailer with 3343 dry weight. It came with a heavy duty Load Leveling and anti sway bar. Told the wife we're traveling as light as possible and carrying a limited amount of water.

Installed the P3 brake controller. During a short test drive it works great. Power is absolutely no problem.

Friend with a similar configuration said to drive in 4th gear, don't let it go into 5th and keep speeds under 65. He's towing 4500 lbs.

I put new tires on the trailer as they were the original tires at 15 years old. Bearing Buddy had grease in them, wheels bearings "felt" fine.

Our first trip is about 30 miles away, mostly freeway travel. Looking for suggestions and/or concerns with my set up.

You are able to see, and assess, whether or not this hitch system will work. I agree with Don, above, that just about any 1/2 ton pickup, would be a better choice.

I can't see how your receiver is mounted, but if only rated 200 lbs., it seems the bars from the WDH would only put more stress on what the hitch is mounted to.

If you feel it is safe, and the car handles well, then give it a go.

Happy camping, and welcome to the forum.

  • You should be fine. Establish your no "greater than" numbers for weighs, speeds and distances, stick with them and enjoy.

  • It seems you are considering towing a 4,000 lb. loaded trailer, with a car, that has a hitch rating of 200 lbs.?

The tongue weight will be 400-500 lbs., I don't see how this will work.

    Maybe I am missing something?

  • Without an equalizer/sway control hitch you are asking for trouble.
  • Personally I would not do it! Your passanger car does not have a real frame, so all the weight has to be handled by sheet metal. Towing at or near maximum can place a real strain on tow vehicles, your is not really designed to handle towing. You would be wise to buy a decent used 1/2 ton truck to use for towing. Heck, any decent used truck would be 10 times better than your car.
