towing capacity HELP!

I recently purchased a 2008 Suburban with 5.3 vortex Engine and 3.73 rear end. We have had the bug to purchase a travel trailer for sometime, hence, the reason for the suburban purchase. We live here in Tampa and this weekend is the RV Super show. We went to the show and have fallen in love with a travel trailer but the dry weight of the trailer is 7750 lbs. The sales people advised that the suburban should be able to tow with no problems, but I am very concerned as I do not want to put my family in any danger. Can someone help me with some input as to what is the most my suburban can tow?

thanks,

  • Is it a 1500 or 2500 Suburban? The 7750 dry trailer will most likely be 8700 to 9000 once loaded with your gear. This will put your tongue weight somewhere around 1000 pounds. What is the payload or the Suburban. Trailer appears to be a bit heavy. On the flip side, many people tow more than the numbers say.
  • Thank you. Mine is rated at 8100 lbs but the TT weighs 7700lbs dry weight and salesperson is telling me the suburban will have no problem towing it. I am in Tampa and we have the RV Show this weekend at the fairgrounds and prices are great, but we really fell in love with this TT.
  • I had a 2003 Suburban - same set up, 5.3 and 3.73. I towed a TT that was about 6500 lbs LOADED. The Suburban really worked and struggled. I upgraded shocks, tires and such, but it still had a hard time. My Sub had a GVWR of 7200 lbs, and was rated for about 7500 towing, I think.
