Towing difficulty

I am new to towing a large camper. We bought a Nissan Armada to tow with and have an older 27 foot camper. We have been told that this is a great towing vehicle and that we should not have problems towing this camper with this vehicle but we are. When we are driving it will suddenly slide side ways, car and all. The camper is not swaying but the whole thing moves side ways. It sheared off the tread on the car tires during the last long trip we took. We are considering buying a different camper but I'm not sure the camper is the problem. Any one encounter this?

  • I tow with a 20011 Armada without any problem whatsoever. My trailer is dry weighted at 5400 lbs, My TV is rated for 9000 lbs and I can't imagine an older 27 ftr weighing more than that so that should not be your problem. Not sure if you use a sway control equalizer but I sure would. The tires for your Armada should be more than enough so I tend to think you have another issue. Find a local RV shop for help.Good luck.
  • Never heard of this unless a defective tire or you didn't have the PSI maxed out for towing. I second getting some LT rated tires either way.
  • I have to ask this. what are the tires you have on? are they "P" rated? if so they are they are passenger tires, switch to LT tires. the P tires are soft sided and will give under a heavy load. you might be under wheel base length for that sized TT.
  • I will say it. I'm scared. What caused the tires to fail? Even if you exceed the capacities of your tv vehicle, either the rear tires will fail or you will burn a rear differential. Sounds like you described tire separation. Either your tires are old, very poor quality, or way overloaded/ poorly inflated. My questioning would be 98% on tire condition and rating.
