Didn't read anywhere in the OP that he wasn't satisfied with the capabilities of the truck. Only concerned with fuel mileage.I had a '94 4.3 and pulled a 3000lb trailer. It had no problem pulling the trailer and got the same mileage.

Like I said, weight plus rear end ratio are all playing into his dilemma. I pull 13,500 pounds with 8,000 pounds worth of dually and can get 11.5 MPG. So yes I know what Im talking about. Little motor is going to have to work way harder to move XXX pounds of load down the road than a properly matched motor/rear end ratio moving the same load.
