Towing in Overdrive??

Hey all I have the truck in my sig and I was wondering what the opinion on towing in OD is? I have a bigger camper now but in the past I have always just towed in OD and if I came to a big hill I would push the button and turn the OD off. Just wondering what everyone else did? Thanks!!
  • Just like at the race track, Cummins12V98 holeshot me by a fraction of a second and took the win!!! :B

The 48re really has no over drive. It is a 4 speed auto with 4th gear being 1 to 1. Tow haul basically only alters the shift points to better utilize the motors torque curve.

    Hu??? Say what??????

4th gear is OD. The transmission has been around since the 60's as the 727 torque flight.

Same with the C-6 Ford and TH-400 GM

Tow in TH and yes use OD just don't let the engine lug. Manually down shift when you know it will need to.

Thanks oldman I did do a search but didnt find these!
Welcome. They're pretty old, but still relevant.
  • Just to clarify I do not have a tow/haul button I have a OD on/off button on the end of the gear shifter. Is that one in the same maybe??

  • I used overdrive when I towed with my 2007 Cummins powered truck which had the same transmission your truck has. Never had an issue. My 5er weighs about 11,500#.
  • I don't like using tow/haul for several reasons so yeah, I tow in OD for the most part. If I hit a hill I let the computer downshift unless I want more speed. I use t/h in the mountains to engage the engine braking, but that's about it.
