Towing info for 1990 GMC Sierra 1500 reg. cab

Hi,

So we are looking at getting a trailer. I have a 1990 GMC Sierra 1500 2wd reg.cab truck but being new to campers not really sure what weight we can tow with it.Been looking online but being an old truck hard to find much info.Would prefer not having to get a newer truck as I love this old thing.

  • Tow rating was in the 3000-7500 pounds range. Does it have the 5.7L? Do you know the axle ratio? I think best case with a well maintained unmodified fuel injected 5.7L , 4-spd trans, 3.73 or 4.10 axle and trans cooler you'll want to be close to 5000 pounds dry. If it isn't the 5.7L, or 3.42 or lower, or it isn't in showroom condition, stick to popups. It's a 25 year old truck. How well it will tow at/near its ratings depends primarily on how well it was maintained or upgraded over that time.
