Towing issue

I have an 06 Ram 1500 4.7 8 cylinder capable of towing 6500 lbs.

The trailer is 5250 - loaded figure 5700.

I have the old school sway bar hitch. There is no up/down adjustment for the hitch or the bars.

When the trailer is hooked to the truck, we have the V issue - the rear of the truck and front of the trailer are 'dipping' due to the weight.

I was told about suspension air bags that can be used to provide additional suspension for towing the trailer.

I am not able to purchase a bigger truck, so I am going to have to make an enhancement to improve travel and safety.

Has anyone used these products and what do you think?

Thanks,

  • You may be confusing a weight distributing hitch with a sway controlling hitch. Those bars with chains are for distributing the weight into the tow vehicle not sway control. Sounds like it's not setup correctly or you're not connecting the chains correctly. Are you jacking up the TT's tongue jack prior to connecting the chains? Generally this type of setup would be used with a friction sway control mechanism.
  • I am not that familiar with the different types of hitches available.

I have the hitch that has the sway bars with the chains. The ball is 2" 5/16".

  • I think you should buy a quality weight distributing hitch.
