Towing RV with AWD vs 4wheel

Anyone towing with AWD? Looking at a suburban with AWD, tow package,
cooling, 3.73 axel 2006 model year. Has the 6 liter V8. Would
rather have 4wheel I think. Anyone with advice before I buy would
be great. I'm towing 28 foot Springdale UVW 6,200lbs. What are
the disadvantages of AWD vs 4 Wheel?

  • I have 3 vehicles with full-time AWD and I like it. No problems. The handling feels more secure to me than 2WD, and I don't have to worry about engaging it when I hit a slick surface, disengaging it to avoid driveline damage, etc. But none of my vehicles are Burbs.
  • The only thought I have is that typically, AWD vehicles don't do as well on gas mileage as a standard two wheel drive. I think you are better off with a FWD truck that can stay in two wheel drive except for when you need the four wheel drive.

That being said, I also drive a AWD Suburu Outback and love it....but I don't tow with it!
  • Not me personally, but my uncle tows with a 2005 suburban 1500 with the all-wheel-drive option. Same 5.3 L V8 and transmission as his sons 1500 with the pushbutton four-wheel-drive. They both tow the same 26 foot boat on a tandem trailer. This combination weighs roughly 6000 pounds, and both trucks have around 150,000 miles on them, without any real mechanical problems aside from basic items like alternator and electrical assessories.
  • Unless they have changed the design, Suburban/Tahoe all wheel drive
are NOT 4x4 and employs a viscous coupling as the third member (center
    diff)

    Also, only half ton IIRC

Helped someone on another forum and found that it was NOT up to towing
heavy. He believed in the MTWR as an absolute...meaning it was for
all conditions...it is NOT. MTWR is only for a 'curb' vehicle...AKA Stripper

Recommend staying within the real MTWR, which will require a visit to
a weigh station with the Suburban fully loaded (cargo, people, pets,
firewood, etc, etc) and then do the simple math in reference to the
    listed 'curb' or GCWR
