Towing Scenario, Insights/Feedback Wanted

New to towing, but here's the setup we're looking at. Does this look reasonable? Am I overlooking anything? (will have WDHitch, sway bars and such)

2014 Jeep GC 4WD EcoDiesel
(Specs: GVWR 6,800 / TR 7,200 / GCWR ~13,000)
Est. GVW 6,500
+Curb W: 5,300
+Payload: 600
+Tongue W: 600

FR Grey Wolf 19RR Toy Hauler (GVWR 7,575)
Est. GVW 6,000
+UVW: 4,300
+Est. Payload: 1,500
+200 lbs (for margin of error)

GCW = 12,500

Sorry to burst your bubble, but too much trailer for too small a tow vehicle. A small pop-up camper will just about be the limit of what your Jeep GC can pull.

Nah, they could probably pull a 18-20' light trailer as long as you kept the stuff in the vehicle to a minimum and only two people. My 3,600 GVWR trailer with a tongue weight under 500lb wouldn't be too much for a GC. But upping that to a toyhauler is in fact asking too much of the vehicle. Time to get a bigger tow vehicle if he wants to bring the toys =)
  • Six hundred pounds payload? Hubby will take 200 of that sitting in it.
  • Sorry to burst your bubble, but too much trailer for too small a tow vehicle. A small pop-up camper will just about be the limit of what your Jeep GC can pull.
  • Every time I just see a Jeep GC in the parking lot at the local grocery store, I am reminded of these forums and how many different posts there have been about this same subject, "Can my Jeep GC tow this...?" And physically looking at those GC's at the grocery store, I shake my head and think to myself ... how in the world can anyone possibly think this vehicle can tow much more than a 4x8 U-Haul utilty trailer? I suppose because they put a receiver hitch on them, folks think they can tow anything? I shake my head every time I see one. Sorry ... I don't think it will work very well for you. (not long term anyway!)
  • Its about tongue weight and the payload of the jeep.. As it sits the TW of trailer is 574lbs advertised. Add battery and propane you'll be up to 700 or so. ( Guesstimate from experience)

Then add toys in and you may well be up near 1000 lbs..

Whats the jeeps payload say on the door?
Who will be in the jeep when you will tow?

If you own the jeep already I would take it to the scales and see what you have as actual payload. I would do this before I buy any trailer.

Load car with all passengers, full tank fuel, and any gear you may carry.. You may be surprised that you may not be able to carry all that weight on the tongue...

You can only get so much off with a WD hitch...

That trailer may be a good fit if it wasn't a toy hauler...Although I am not familiar with how the weight transfer when toys are added.

The toy guys can answer better...

  • The Jeep's payload number of 600 is glaring. If that is correct, the trailer empty will be too much after you place a second person in the tow vehicle and 80-100 lbs for the WD hitch.

Tongue weight should be 15% of trailer weight, so 6000 lb trailer, = 900 tongue weight.
