The single digit mpgs are definitely towing, but I'd guess most of the time it's just a heavy foot. Diesel or not, 20 mpg average for a 5K SUV isn't too bad. You would think that he were to go to the trouble of recording mpg like that he would put some notes like "towing", etc.
