WOW. amazing comments in here. VW aren't built to tow, Unibody can't handle towing, the engine is too small, you can't trust the numbers....... automotive engineers are way smarter about what their vehicle can do than we are. the max GVWR and GCWR are within the limits of the vehicle. the vehicle is designed with a safety factor so there is no need to derate the GVWR or GCWR unless specified by the manufacture. if your fuel mileage is below what you think it should be and the vehicle is maintained and operating correctly then it is consuming what is necessary to produce the power your are demanding. Way too many factors to consider to just throw out comments whether it should or shouldn't get better MPG. there is no doubt that a powertrain that is worked hard may wear faster than one that isn't, do the maintenance and use recommended fluids. and SLOW DOWN towing ability is more than just engine power.
