I'll be buying used or try to...it is the principle of the pricing driven by
the fashion statement crowd that has adopted SUV's and Trucks...Few
remember the days when a pickup was one of the lowest priced vehicles
out there. Only those who really used them as 'trucks' bought them.
Used is always a gamble whether the previous owner(s) took care, used good to
high quality materials and does NOT drive it to the ground
Unibody/Monocoque has a new manufacturing process that will bear over time for
WD Hitch systems. It is the move towards gluing sections together along with
either spot welds and/or laser welding. MIG was the latest and greatest for a
long time, but now only for heavier sections where fill material is needed
Most glues either have volatiles that will continue to evaporate or if catalyst
(epoxy family)...will continue to harden...to then become brittle. The quality
of materials and the science of that mixture dictate that process time
Granted...gluing does increase the stressed area...therefore the PSI is lower
vs spot welds...but that aging issue is unknown to me...unless they have invented
some sort of super material
This has issues with 'cars' too over time, but not as large an issue, IMHO,
as with TVs
Real trucks to me, can be rebuilt and are designed for that longevity
of service. The body and interior's age I can live with. Of course I'd
love to have new, but not at the cost of buying new these days. Again
makes no matter whether I can afford it or not...it is the principle
of what I perceive gouging by the OEMs
Important for me, as I keep my vehicles a loooong time, use them HARD, drive
them HARD, but maintain them with the best materials and aggressive schedules
So much of this topic 'depends' on many, many factors. Many which are unknown
until they rear their ugly heads or not...
