Towing with Dodge 6.4

Anyone have towing experience with towing with the Dodge with the 6.4 engine? I'd be towing an 8000 trailer, and was wondering how well they pull,up hills and such. Thank you
  • 6.4 2500 4X4 with 3.73 gears towing 8500# TT. Overall, it tows like a dream. I came from a Duramax diesel and am hard pressed to notice a huge difference. Of course, the diesel had more low end power but the 6.4 hauls my TT around beautifully, even with the truck loaded down with people and gear.

One of the last times I was out I rolled through the scales at around 17,000# (truck + tt) and up over the cascade mountain range here in Oregon (about 4500' elevation) and it was no problem. I could pull it at just whatever speed I wanted to. 2nd gear revs about 3500rpm @ 60mph which is right at the heart of the power. The 4.10 gears would probably be closer to 4,000rpm but will have a bit better low end. Again the diesel would have done it at 2,000rpm but the Hemi sounds great :)

A trailer of the size you are talking about is a perfect fit and leaves you with plenty of room for people and gear.
  • Yes the 6.4L in the trucks uses 87 octane only, not 89 like the 5.7L Hemi.
  • I am on my second year towing a 29' Sunny Brook with a 6.4l Ram 2500 w 20" wheel package. The combination pulls like it is on rails. I use no WD or spring bars at all. Just drop it on the ball and go. The truck is level and so is the trailer. I couldn't ask for a better rig.

  • I welcome it too as I am now looking at the 6.4 in the 2500 :)

Thanks for supplying one of my least favorite, and certainly un-useful comments. There are very few novel topics anymore.

Lots of people have asked about this but there have been few actual users to post about their experiences.
I welcome more discussion on the topic.

  • Cannot comment on the the 6.4 but would think it would be better then my 5.7 that used to haul my 8000pd camper. The 5.7 never felt lacking in power even up long inclines of 1000 feet in elevation it did the job well, milage regardless what I did was giving me the 8.9mpg towing area. Only thing that changed fuel milage was a good tail wind. Again the 6.4 being a bigger engin would have more pull, plus am told they run on 87 octane not 89 and would save a little at the pump.
  • I have some experience. I am very happy with mine, even coming from a diesel truck. I have some videos towing 11,500# and 14,000# 5ers with mine that will help you. The 14k unit is over 40' long and belongs to a friend. I towed it as a test. When compred to his 2014 Ram 3500 with the 6.7L Cummins, the 0-60 times were nearly identical at 22 seconds towing his huge RV. My 5er is 37' and weighs 11500# give or take, and the Hemi pulls it in 5th gear at about 2200 RPM and gets about 7-9mpg. I pulled the same RV with a 2007 5.9L Cummins and got 10-11mpg.

  • You will be amazed at how torquey the the gas is. 7000 lbs 70 mph 10 mpg if driven carefully.
