The owner's manual for my newer F150 says to tow with the O/D off. Even though my trailer is less than half of its tow capacity, I do what the manufacturer recommends.
I'm still getting 10-11 MPG while towing, without worry of overheating the transmission. It also keeps the engine at a slightly higher RPM, more in the torque band. Zips over hills without needing to downshift.
Definitely check on the transmission cooler. My boss had an older Ford that had issues when towing his boat (less wind resistance than a travel trailer).
