Well, I know my Duramax/Allison would lock up above 2nd gear, and it always seemed to be locked on climbs at speed as far as I could tell. But it would build some heat in long climbs even in 5th or 6th gear -- not unreasonable amounts, but it would inch up above the 200* mark where it usually stayed.
But yeah, staying where it is locked up will be your best bet, which is why you can generate a lot of heat driving in flat stop and go traffic.
