On a flat tow home you will be all fine. And you may be able to tow in 4th gear but I think you will see the tranny trying to up shift constantly and that will raise the temps. Towing in 3rd gear will probably be better suited for you.
You truck will have a trans cooler factory built into the radiator. And this works ok for short runs but when under load for a long time it won't allow good cooling. I would recommend a cheap B&M stacked tranny cooler. Easy instal for any shop and you will see a 20 to 30 degree drop in temperature. And as your truck and transmission are older do not get a transmission flush as this will lead to damage. Just drop the pan and install a new filter and refill with new fluid.
As far as tranny temps go in my 2006 chevy colorado which is running the same 4l60e tranny, the transmission will go into protection mode at 270*f not saying to run past 220*f but this gives you a good idea of new technology. Another thing you can do to save this transmission is to install a set of corvette servos this will help to keep the fluid pressure up and give you a firmer shift which aids in helping the bands in the transmission.
And last there are obd2 readers like the scan gauge and edge insite that will let you read your transmission temps and there are also some apps out there for your phone so you can read your information.
