Toyota pickup trucks for a truck camper?

I'm new to the RV/camper world & I'm in the market for a truck camper now because I plan on doing some camping trips with the guys in the near future. I'm currintly saving up for a pickup truck that can support a truck camper. I would love to use a Toyota pickup with seating for 3 passengers & one driver. Doesn't have to be four door as two doors tend to have a better wheelbase to support truck campers & usually more bed space.

I would go with an american pickup truck because allot of truck campers I've seen are often on american trucks with V8 engines but they usually get awful gas mileage even without a truck camper weighing it down & we're usualy on a tight budget when we camp. So, could an 80's or 90's Toyota Hilux V6 4X4 support a 2k lbs truck camper & drive on the freeways ok? I might go with an old Lance truck camper for a 6 long bed because a 6 bed truck is easier to park than the 8 long bed trucks if I have to back up or parallel park between cars.
