Toyota Tundra as a TV???

I like my Crewmax, plenty of room for the family and does everything I need it to. Has no problem at all pulling my 26' trailer tha weighs in just a little over 6,000 lbs loaded. I propbably wouldnt like it though if I pulled a 30' 8,500 lb trailer. I get 15 mph around town and 9-10 towing here in the mountains of Utah. I just took it to KY and back (sans trailer) and averaged 17.5 for the 3,700 miles.

I did however pull with my step sons Chevy 2500 diesel and it would easily blow the tundra away. Of course he's a 20 year old punk with a fancy tuner that puts out around 900 HP, so it's not really a fair comparison.

The assumption embedded in my question was that whatever you were towing and hauling was comfortably in the weight rating of the truck.

Boils down, IMHO, to blind loyalty and misconceptions (whether ignorance
or pure lack of concern/understanding) of how the ratings systems work.

I love my 2012 Tundra CrewMax. You can't beat the power and interior comfort of the CrewMax. I get almost 18mpg when empty and 9 - 10mpg when towing. I tow a 8,300lbs TT and have been happy with the set up. Like everyone said, payload can be an issue. All half tons will have that issue unless HD package. I am loaded almost 350lbs over payload and with proper weight distribution hitch sit completely level. Only you can decide if you are comfortable being over payload. I am within all other weights.

Agreed. The one thing Toyota could do better is offer a max payload option like Ford does. It would be nice to have a bigger fuel tank too. With my 26 gals, I usually stop for gas about every 200 miles, which works OK for us as we camp locally most of the time. On the other hand, 200 miles is about the time I want to stop and stretch the legs anyway.

Tundra owners will all love their truck. It is a capable 1/2 ton truck like the other brands. Payload will always be an issue with 1/2 ton trucks outside of those makers offering upgraded payload packages like the Ford Max payload package that adds significantly to it.

'07 Tundra owner here with about 81K on the clock. It's been a very good truck. I tow about 7,800 lbs fully loaded. 9-11 mpg towing, most of the time around 9.

I would concur. We were pulling a 7500-lb 34-footer and the truck handled it pretty well. (As someone on this site once said, "more engine than truck," and I think that's an accurate description.) Traded the big TT in for a 6500-lb 27-footer this year and it seems like we now have a great match.

IMO, the weak link in the Tundra is the smaller gas tank (20 gals.) That has been a bit more of an inconvenience for us than the lower payload. If we had 3 kids and 2 large dogs, I might feel differently. :)

We tow with the truck in my signature - essentially the same drivetrain. Payload is still the Achilles heel here but our TT weighs in at about 6,000 lbs ready to travel. I verify tongue weight with a scale so I do not exceed GVWR.

As for fuel economy we get anywhere from 11 to 12 mpg towing depending on grade and wind. That's an improvement of about 2 mpg over what I was getting towing with our old 5.9 L Dodge van but the Sequoia has way more hp & torque. Solo gas mileage is abysmal in the city but we can eke out nearly 21 mpg on the highway if conditions are right. Good luck & safe travels.
