I've had a SPOT tracker since they first came out in 2007. It'll run you about $150 @ year, but in addition to tracking your travels, family/friends you allow can see where you are as well, even outside of cell coverage. The main features are, it has "help" and "911" buttons to summon the appropriate response. Great piece of mind when boondocking, backpacking, off roading, etc...
