Modern gloss surface cabinetry typically uses MDF or even press-board as the structure. They are both very heavy materials. I have quite a few of my cabinet doors made from rails and stiles of cedar and the center panels are a woven "lawn chair" fabric. They are light and allow air to transfer into the carcass. I don't think they look bad but if I tire of the color or style, the center panels are easily replaced.
