Trailer Brake Controller settings?

I pull a 7200# trailer and use a setting of 6 on the gain. I was wondering if this seems right for the weight or should I be getting closer to 10. I have only really pulled in relatively flat land so it has been a little hard to judge.

Thanks,
Mike
  • I hadn't used mine in about a month, last Wednesday heading out down the street, I did a check on mine. I had to do a minor adjustment, worked well this weekend. It needs a little adjustment every now and then...
  • Thanks for the tips. Just checking to see what other are doing.
    Thanks again.

I check mine each time I leave for a trip. As I'm going down a residential street I get up to 20 mph and fully engage the trailer brake manually using the controller as I pass a driveway. If I stop smoothly by the time I reach the next driveway I call it good. I'm guessing it to be about 80' or so.

Not a very scientific approach but gives me the warm fuzzy to keep going.

If it's a jerky, harsh stop your gain is too high. Play around with it until it feels right.
This is what I do as well, and is great advice. There are way to many variables for the OP to get advice on the exact settings of HIS controller.
  • Turn it up until you have a problem with locking up the wheels then back it off until that goes away.
    Good luck / Skip

As mentioned. It has all to do with the trailer brakes, and not the weight. IF the trailer brakes are really good. You could have it set down lower than 6. 6 is just the starting point to begin adjusting. You may need to go down, or up.

  • the manual for the controller Should tell you how to check/test for the correct setting.

but ITS NOT the weight of the trailer.. its the use/adjustments of the trailer brakes... and NO 2 are the same.
