It is separate from the Tow Vehicle's ABS, much like all modern semi-trailers. It piggybacks and ABS module onto a hydraulic brake actuator, and uses new wheel speed sensors on the trailer to detect slip and module the trailer brakes.
I'm not sure on the particulars of what information is communicated between the DirecLink and the "ActuLink" actuator. I suspect it uses the TV's wheel speed as a reference speed for when to activate ABS.
