Trailers where slides do NOT block access?

My travel partner is wanting out of his current Coachmen trailer, to upgrade somewhat and have something with a slide. He wants something with a better quality of materials and insulation, easily set up for boondocking and cool winter camping.

We've looked at floor plans from Grand Design, Lance, and Jayco. We want a bedroom with a door, a slide, and a bathroom with the sink inside it. The trailer has to be fully functional and accessible with the slide IN. We have to stay towable with a F150 and want to keep dry weight around 5000. We don't need or want bunks--just the 2 of us. We've looked at Olivers, but are deterred by the 7' width, small baths, and the price tag.

It appears that every Grand Design floor plan in our weight limit is set up so the slide blocks either the kitchen or bedroom. Plus the refrigerator is in the slide and we don't want that.

The only Jayco model that otherwise fits our needs is the 24RBS. The kitchen area has a funky angled countertop that looks like it will bump up against the slide, and block access to the bathroom and kitchen, when the slide is in. Does anyone have any first-hand observations about the usability of the trailer with the slide in?

The Lance 2295 MIGHT work, although I don't care for that giant entertainment center blocking off the middle. The Lance 2375 has the angled counter section like the Jayco 24RBS. But again a person can't tell about the slide clearance.

None of these trailers are conveniently located to us and we would like to have some input before making a drive to see one. Any input from real-life observations is appreciated!
  • We have a Lance 1995, and tow with an F150 EcoBoost. I use it for winter camping. Maybe it is too small for you, but it meets all of your stated criteria. It is the smallest Lance with a walk-around bed (the 1985 also has walk-around bed, but heavier tongue wt.)
  • If you can bear with it, here's a YouTube video of a pretty good arrangement. I think this video would be better if they guy would simply quick talking and show more of the camper. But if you can endure this, the camper is very functional with slides in.

  • Don’t know why you do not want a fridge in the side. That could eliminate a lot of possible models. It is a very common arrangement and no problem with fridge operation. Mine is 10 yrs old and works fine even in very hot temps.
  • our outback 295RE with both slides in still has easy access to bedroom, bathroom, fridge, microwave, oven, cooktop, sink, dinette, cooking utinsles, and pantry. basically anything we need for a quick stop, or if we want a quick getaway in the morning, pull the slides in the night before. No acess to the couch TV etc.

The 298RE, basically the same trailer with a bedroom slide same story.
  • the slide blocking use is a deal breaker for us. Some of the places we go to have lots of trees, and you can't always get the slide out. So being able to use the Tt with the slide in, in a must.

Our Apex is fully usable with the slide in. But it does have bunks. Surveyer also has some that are usable with the slide in.
  • After owning a couple of trailers with slides, I find it's just not a big deal if I have to push a button for 20 seconds to get a slide out of the way.
So I suggest folks don't pass up a unit I really like just because of that small factor.
  • Take a look at the Winnebago Minnie 2401RG. The slide does block access but the 2 outside doors makes it a non-problem...at least for us.
  • Jayco and Coachmen have a few. I am eye balling a couple now as a possible future unit. The White Hawk 29FLS and the Freedom Express 276RKDS. While not quite on my radar, the Apex 249RBS is another full use candidate with slide closed.

There is a very detailed video walk thru on the White Hawk that shows the access to everything with the slides closed, then they show it with the slides open.

There are several other models that are under 30' and have full access, but some of them are that way because they have two entry doors which make them fully accessible with slides in.

This is a requirement for my next TT purchase..... full use of trailer even with slides closed.
