The reason the aftermarket wants it before the radiator is to have the largest temperature difference between the oil and air, this gives the largest BTU rating for the cooler. All advertising. The same cooler after the radiator will reject less BTU's, but result is lower oil temp returning to the tranny.
AFIK all the Duramax diesels have the radiator first, then the factory cooler, then the return to the pan. Almost all your heat generation is in the torque converter, it is several orders of magnitude greater then what you could hope to get from the radiator into the oil at cruise in cold weather.
