Transmission service

How often do you have your transmission serviced? I have an Excursion and want to do more towing this summer than I've done before. I have more time, no summer school.

  • Guess I'm an old school guy. Trans oil gets changed every 30k regardless. Overkill? Perhaps.
  • The manual for my '04 excursion said 100,000 miles. I changed the oil and filter at about 110,000. 190,000 now with no trouble. Don't do a power flush on an old transmission.
  • :) Hi, remove pan, drain torque converter, blow out cooler lines, and replace filter every 30,000 miles. Never do a flush.
  • ^This is the way to do it.
OP, just don’t let anyone talk you into a power flush on an older trans

Serviced? never. Drain the pan and torque converter myself at 30k intervals.
    Refill with Mobil 1 synthetic.

x2... I drain the pan, then add 5 quarts. Then disconnect the output cooler line and put in 5 quart container...( This way I can keep track of what i'm pumping out. Start truck. As fluid comes out I add it back through dipstick tube. When starts pumping pink'er ( or get to the 12 quart mark) I stop. Reconnect and top off.

Thats my own flush..Changes 90% of the fluid I would think...

    Mobile 1 for sure..
  • Yup - what Scott said. Follow the severe service schedule in your owners manual and you simply can't go wrong!

    Cheers!

  • Do you have a drain plug in the trans pan? If not when you have them drop the pan and change the filter have them put a pan with a plug in it.

This way you can drop 3 or 4 quarts at your leisure if you know you been running hot..

I change the filter every 30k according to chevy.
  • Your owners manual will give you guidelines for severe duty, go by that.
