Thanks guys - this is really great feedback and exactly the sort of stuff I was looking for.
It is a one-way trip - we have a camper for 3 weeks (no, not our little Shadow Cruiser, though that would be seriously cool to take that around the US).
I'm off to bed now (I'm in India this week, so am many timezones behind you guys). I'll go through the suggestions in detail when I get off work tomorrow evening.
