An Ex is more capable than any pickup. Design matters, and the Ex has two attributes — short rear overhang plus fully independent suspension — that make it the far more stable choice.
Pickups are rollover prone. Always a bad choice unless solo business needs require it.
Tow capacity is fairly well meaningless as it isn’t defined. “Payload” is pretty well passenger compartment in this instance. Load it up, take it across the scale. Where is the weight? On the rear axle.
A WDH transfers TW from one location to across three. AXLE CAPACITY is what matters (along with tire & wheel ratings). Payload & Tow capacity aren’t any help at all.
Greater risk: put you and your family in a pickup.
