- RobWNYExplorerI have a Forest River Hemisphere 5th wheel. It has an aluminum frame and it's the sister unit to the Rockwood line. I would classify it as a lower end to mid range unit off the lot. I would say that if you like the travel trailer, buy the travel trailer. You can put a better stereo in it, you can swap out the tires, you can put in a upgraded converter, put in a better Television, better mattress, better faucets etc. You can do all of these things a heck of a lot cheaper than you can buy a travel trailer with those things already installed. The manufacturer/dealer markup for those things is crazy. And you can do those things as time and money allows. But, if you're not handy at all buy a better unit to begin with.
- goducks10ExplorerAs mentioned almost every MFG has an aluminum framed line of trailers. What you need to look for is how the aluminum framing is constructed. Is it fully welded? Are there wood inserts where fasteners are used? How thick is the aluminum and what size is the aluminum?
- GrandpaKipExplorer IIJust because it has aluminum framing does not mean it is a “higher end” trailer.
If I was looking for another camper, I would look for better products from the factory such as a Progressive converter rather than a WFCO, Endurance or LT tires, Kenwood or Sony stereo rather than Jensen, a decent mattress, upgraded suspension, etc. The list could go on and on. As would the price. - ppineExplorer IIAluminum frames are much less likely to come apart with use compared to wood frames. They do not rot. They weigh less.
- wanderingaimlesExplorerMost brands build a range of product lines across various price points.
Aluminum framed with Filon or smooth glass/plastic sides are common in what I think most folks would call mid to upper grade units. A quick scan through manufacturer literature should be easy to spot smoothe sided lines versus the metal sided ones which are more frequently wood framed sides and walls. - downtheroadExplorerMost all of the current companies making travel trailers make some or all of their models with aluminum framing.
