Travel Trailer Bunkhouse...Suggestions and Brands

I am looking to purchase another travel trailer with the bunkhouse floorplan. I would prefer slightly used in the 2011-2015 range. I currently have a 2006 Keystone Zeppelin and am looking at a slightly larger unit in the 32-35 foot range, with outdoor kitchen.
I would like to hear opinions or experiences concerning brands (Forest River,Dutchmen,Heartland,Keystone,Jayco, etc...) and any specific units that I should consider or avoid.

Thanks
  • Thanks to all for your input. I have heard good things about all of the models mentioned. Will definitely take your suggestions into consideration.
  • ^^ The Bullet has an arched barrel ceiling for added headroom and a full sink, electric fridge, and 2 burner stove in the outdoor kitchen.
  • We have the keystone hornet 2011 31RBDS. We boutght it 1 year old (new) for less than $20k. I thinke the keystone Bullet premier 31BHPR has a similar layout for about $5k more on average.
    1. We love the outdoor kitchen, great for keeping the beer cold around the campfire without having on relaod on ice... would have liked to have an outdoor sink with a drain (or not would probably fill up the gray tank)
    2. absoultoly will not buy another trailer without the second door to teh bathroom. late night trips while around the campfire sont disturb the sleeping kids. kids dont track dirt sand through the camper just to use the RR. and keeps bugs outta the camper.
    3. the hornet is heavier, and has an overall higher clearance. inside height is about 84" so it seems a lot roomier if you are over 6'. Seems like others are about 76" or so. this allows for your slides to be about 73". But the extra height comes with a cost ...weight
    4. look at the lenght and hight of the bunks on the slide. Ours is a little shorter. If the kids are short, (less than5') it may be Ok, is there a FUTON option on the floor.
    5. i personally like the aluminum sides. I had a problem with delamination on my previous camper with fiberglasss.
    6. we like the laminate rather than carpet in the main living area
    hope this helps.
  • We opted for a Solaire 317bhsk. It took us about 2 months to make a decision... And it came down to either the Solaire or a Cherokee 29dbh. There were trade offs either way but it ultimately came down to getting the Solaire for the same price as the Cherokee with the Solaire being fiberglass.

We will be traveling with 2 kids and 2 dogs. Having the option to enter the bathroom without going through the trailer... A separate room to close the dogs in when needed AND give the kids a space of their own were on the top of the list.

I also didn't know this until after we choose the trailer, but it has torsion axles which I prefer over leaf sprung suspension.
  • I'd suggest our current tt, keystone Bullet Premier 31bhpr. Two large slide outs, 1 in main living area, 1 in bunkhouse. Separate queen bed up front, bunkhouse in back. Two upper bunks and a lower king size futon across from storage/entertainment. Big outside kitchen and 2nd door direct into bathroom.

Just under 35' tip to tail, yellow stickers at 6400lbs which is light for its size. Tows easy and stable with the spread axle stance.

We've spent over 100 nights and 10k miles with it the last 3 summers with no issues.
  • If you have the truck for it, at that length I think you're better off with a fifth wheel. It gives you a shorter overall package and tows a lot nicer. The higher roof also makes it feel more spacious. Just my opinion.
  • This is my preference I would look into a toy hauler because than you can make the back portion how ever you want it. I put carpet in mine and you could build bunk beds put a TV in the back and also make it their toy room as well . Or mine has beds on a chain pulling system so you can raise and lower the beds when you need to use them.
  • I have a 2014 Jayco Jayflight 32BHDS. It is just over 35ft to the tongue. We really like it. I have had warranty work done from time to time. I really like that Jayco has a 2 year bumper to bumper warranty. They even cover tire blow outs during that time and any damage that might do. My trailer is in the shop now for the second blow out in two years. I could go down the list of stuff I have had repaired and adjusted, but I can't remember it all.

Some of the main features we like are the slide out in the rear bunk area for the kids. It gives them a bunch of room back there. They actually hang out back there some. I think without the slide back there, it would be for sleeping only. The outdoor kitchen is the second highest feature that pulled us in to this trailer. We are short, and don't really use the sink much, but we do use the burners, fridge, cabinets and the counter top a lot. Plus I will put light small things back there to ride with us. The decent size bathroom was a big feature for us as well. There is the second entry door that comes in pretty handy, especially when we go to the beach.

We paid $27162 out the door in April 2014 in California (couldn't get a good price in Arizona) for it new if that helps you. Good luck with your search.
  • Good morning.

My wife and I started out with a forest river v nose bunk house that was 32'. We didn't do the outdoors kitchen as we still semi new and thought didn't need it. Forgot to say it was a 2013 model

Anyways it was a nice floor plan. In the front wedge was the bunk house(4 bunks) and then the living area with slide out and the rest was the bathroom and then the master bedroom with a slide out and a door to the outside.

We liked it but when we received it several outlets didn't work, on our second trip 4 months into owning it the bathroom faucet broke and leaked water, then after that was replaced the awning broke and the front stabilizers let go as well.

We then went looking for a new one as well to many problems with that one.
Also we found we would like the outside kitchen and would like to have a door that leads right to the bathroom as with kids there was a lot of dirt from the going in and out.
We also learned from rainy days that well the kids room should have the slide out so they have more room to play if they can't go out.

We upgraded to a cross roads cruiser 5th wheel CF37BH with two slide outs for the kids room and a outdoor kitchen and bathroom entrance.
No complaints at all with this trailer.
