Travel Trailer Front Cap Cracking Aluma Lite

I have a 2007 Holiday Rambler Aluma Lite. It just developed cracks on the front cap at three scew positions. Any idea on fixing this? Any similar findings?

  • Google "repair plastic bumper" for a number of youtube videos on this subject. The entire piece will have to come off of the trailer to do it properly. You may want to have it done by a auto body repair shop.
  • Thanks for the suggestions. I have drilled holes at the termination of each crack and then covered in tape. Looks like I will have to begin my study of how to repair this when the weather cooperates. So far to progression of the splits. Thanks again.

Unfortunately that was an issue with the 2007 HRs and you are now the 4th person with a cracked front cap in the last 7 years. The Cap is ABS and is EXTREMELY DIFFICULT to repair and I strongly suggest you do the drill hole thing yesterday if not sooner. I would also make sure the hole is large enough to relieve any potential for further cracking or you might end up with it looking like mine did overnight .....

HERE is the most recent thread with the previous three owners who have had issues.

Mine was actually replaced back in 2008 under warranty and I have had no further issues with it. If I ever do have a problem I think I would go the route of removing the CAP and replacing it with a sheet of Filon after appropriate back bracing was installed. Of course the insurance aspect has to be considered in what one would actually do.

Good Luck and let us know how things shake out and what you do.

  • Factory did not predrill holes large enough and/or over tightened screws. You will likely need to have panel replaced to make it like new although they probably can be repaired, they just will not look so hot.
  • Thanks so much for the follow up. The cracks are in the plastic front cap at the very top. I looked and each one is just under where the screws mount to the roof. The cracks are deep and the plastic is completely separated. I have some heavy duty duct tape on it now and will wait to decide what to do. I will drill the holes tomorrow, that is a very good idea. I appreciate any other advise you may have.
  • Is it plastic? If so, you can plastic weld it. Harbor Freight has a kit that's pretty cheap or you can go the real cheap-o route and use a soldering iron as I did.
  • Quick, drill 1/16 inch holes just beyond the end of each crack which should stop it from propagating. I await the answer to the final fix of the crack itself. Epoxy comes to mind.
  • Welcome to the forum! Are the cracks deep, to the point where water might get in, or just surface cracks?
