Travel Trailer Tires

I have a 1 yr old 26' travel trailer with 75 R14's (dual axel). They seem small (and low end). I want to upgrade to R15's. What is considered the best travel trailer tire?
  • There are many thousands of trailer owners that are completely satisfied with 14 inch rims . Switching to ' 15 s'will cost near a thousand dollars . My self I would wear these tires out and then switch to a better-grade of '14s' .

Before you try to upsize, you need to determine whether you have the clearance above the tires. For instance, my travel trailer does not have room to switch to a larger diameter tire. It would rub the bottom of the trailer when the suspension flexed to full travel.

If you can go to 15", I second the recco of GoodYear Wrangler HT, "LT" tires. I run them on one of my horse trailers. It's a good tire.

totally agree. Another thing to check. clearance between the tires. I don't believe my tires could stand to be any closer together. Hard to get my X chock in there now.

  • I agree that a 26 foot TT should have tires larger that 14". I suggest Goodyear Wrangler HT tires in the LT215/75R15 size, they are load range D. Made in USA. They should have 6" wide wheels.
  • Yes, i would just upgrade to a 14" D, read the specs on the tires .
Find out from the mfg using your vin# what your axle is rated for.
I don't think it's necessary to spend the money on new wheels.

An unnecessary expense as you'd have to replace the wheels as well ... your current ST205/75R14 offshore tires are almost certainly load range C. If you want to replace them with a better tire simply invest in a set of US manufactured Goodyear Endurance ST205/75R14 which are load range D, just as an increasing number of us have done. :B Just because a tire is bigger doesn't mean it's better or necessarily provide any more protection against blowouts. ;)

If the cost of this premium tire is an issue then you could alternately go with a set of Carlisle HD tires but the reason they're less costly is they're manufactured in China whereas the GY Endurance is manufactured in the US. In the ST205/75R14 size the Carlisle is available in both load range C and load range D so you want to make sure you bought the latter. Just be aware also that the Carlisle's sidewall isn't anywhere near as stiff as the Goodyear's and not nearly as resistant to scuffs & punctures.
  • Goodyear Endurance, Carlisle HD, and Maxxis have all been Forum favorites for ST tires. If you have the clearance and can get the right offset rims, LT tires remove a lot of headaches.
  • they all will blowout if you have too much weight on them. I bought g rated tires after blowing out about 12 tires. got tired of having blowouts every time we went camping. I finally talked to a friend in the tire business and told him to put 15's on and get rid of the 14's and use a G rated tire. no blow outs so far after 4 years. just make sure you have plenty of room in the tire well
