In order to properly fill a system, you need the compressor running. You were probably having such a hard time getting refrigerant into the system because the compressor wasn't running. The uptake of refrigerant in these systems isn't regulated and you can add so much refrigerant to a system that it destroys the compressor. It's not that hard to do either.
