Truck Camper Floor Strength

A friend brought up something I hadn't thought of, but seems to be relatively common amongst boon dockers.

There are some that take their TC off the truck when staying for a few days. So of course this would effect the "floor strength" of the TC. In all the years I had TCs I've never done that outside of taking it off for winter storage.

And have also heard of people just backing up & stealing the TC, which is a bigger concern. I realize with electric jacks now a days if you lowered it far enough that wouldn't be a concern. Is there a way electric jacks can be locked?

Any opinions?

Cheers :)
  • I installed a master cutoff switch for my jack controller.

Two reasons for doing so.... If something happened to the controller and one or more jacks started going down while driving, well you all know the answer to that... The next reason is the theft issue. My cutoff switch is not labeled and looks inconspicuous. It is a push pull...

  • If you have a cordless remote, for added security you can change the code, just like you reprogram a garage door opener. On our camper, the receiver is under the sink. Then, be sure to stash the remote out of view.
  • My concern is the water tank support while off the truck.
  • Over the years I have seen discussions regarding the use of the TC off the truck and it seems that it depends on the Brand Name of the TC and who makes it.... The major attraction of the TC for me was the versatility and I looked for a manufacturer that stressed the fact that it could be used off the truck. On numerous occasions I have separated mine and it allowed me to use the vehicle for other things while camping.. I lived in my Lance 981 Max for two months off the vehicle with no problems. There have been reports that the entire unit has been stolen from storage facilities when all the thief had to do is hot wire the vehicle and drive off... I feel it would not be easy to steal one when it is stored off the truck... As someone else stated, the jacks have switches that have to be activated to get them to work.
  • After looking at how the floor is built on my TC I would have no worries about going inside when it is off the truck.
  • If they have a hand crank they can raise it but it is going to be a lengthy job and take awhile.

I have never heard of one being stolen and I not going t worry about it. They would have to have a vehicle setup to haul it and there isn't to many people in the middle of nowhere that is looking to steal a camper. Crooks are going to work in heavier populated areas. More chance of finding something worth stealing than in the middle of some woods.

It would be easier to steal a 5er or a bumper pull trailer. Also a MH. With a MH they wouldn't even have to have a rig at all. walk up and hot wire the MH and drive off.
  • For my Bigfoot they have specific recommendations for where to support the truck camper when it is off the truck (3 4x4s and a sheet of plywood). Your camper may have similar manufacturer recommendations.

I like to sit mine on the jack stands and 4x4 because it is a lot more stable (I only take the camper off at the house) and so I feel better about ir.
  • Electric jacks have to be turned on before they can work. They also operate off of a hand held remote control pad. Keep the door to the control on/off panel locked and hide the remote or take it with you when you leave the TC. If they go to the effort of still stealing mine after that then I will call the insurance agent. I also carry full cost replacement on my policy.
