Truck camper overhang and spare tires

So now that I have this shiny new truck, I've been contemplating a shiny new camper to go with it - potentially one that is longer than my 6' 4" bed. But what I can't figure out is how to access the spare tire if the tailgate is down or the camper has an overhang.

What is the secret?

  • The slickest answer to that dilemma that I have seen was to rotate the spare tire winch attachment under the truck 90 degrees..... so that it points to a rear wheel well. Pretty slick.....

Not sure if that is limited to a specific brand/model but I am going to look at doing that with my new truck..... GMC 3500 SRW
  • I could reach the spare using the extension on my short bed F250 while my Arctic Fox was loaded. Once the spare is on the ground and free of the cable, just pull the truck forward instead of trying to drag the spare from under the overhang.
  • Thanks - yes that is the question - how to get to the winch.

I'll get up under there this weekend and see if I could modify the access point for the winch. I hadn't thought about turning it - that might work.

One of the 8' campers I was looking at indicated it needed the tailgate on for a s/b, but I wasn't keen on that solution anyway.
  • Take the tailgate off. Serves no purpose to leave it on. Dealers advise it may cause some damage leaving it on.
With some campers the access port can still be seen to lower the spare.
In a few cases the port access can be shifted off to the side by the tail pipe to access it .
The other thing and maybe the easiest access is a front tire carrier mounted off a front hitch mount.

  • Unless the camper drops down, you can still access as usual.

If the camper does drop down blocking the normal access, you have a few options.

A "stuby" wrench under the truck between the bumper and spare tire.

Rotate the mechanism 90* so the mechanism points to the wheel well and access it above the tire.

Remove/raise the camper on the jacks and access as normal.
