While I don't disagree with your comments regarding Northstar or Truck Camper Warehouse, I have a problem with anecdotal posts as the sample size is so small it is difficult if not impossible to say if they are either valid or reliable. This is a criticism I have offered on other websites, the danger being a tendency to follow the crowd. When you have a couple of folks saying the same thing it often results in a positive halo effect where others think they are getting something good just because they are doing what others say.
With sufficient sample size it becomes possible to provide actual statistics rather than self reports. For example, do Lance TCs leak more often than Arctic Fox or which manufacturers often a weight stickers that reflects actual weights.
At present it is very difficult to gather data based on large enough sample size to know if decisions are well grounded and for many components retailers screen ratings posted to their websites so negative reports are never seen, something that also should end.
So, do they really all leak? If they all leak, do some leak less than others? Do they all weigh more than their manufacturer's sticker? We all seem to take these statements and similar ones for granted. Maybe it's time we stopped.
So here's another thought. Many of us regard Truck Camper Magazine positively. They are likely even following this thread. Why don't they provide the center for date gathering and post the results? they are big on asking questions and publishing answers, although it's a stretch to say they post anything negative. Wonder what would happen if they did. I am betting they would gain readership (but maybe lose advertising)?
