I would get a 4500 for just that reason. A crew cab 4 x4 should still have 7,300 pounds of payload left.
The Dodge turns sharper and has a larger fuel tank than the Ford. It also comes with a Cummins. I'd stay away from any 6.0 or 6.4 diesel. The 6.4 has a reputation as a fuel hog. The 6.0 is just a disaster, we have 2 at work. It's just one expensive repair after another.
4.88 ratio is only the case if you get the max tow package in a Ram 5500. Otherwise the 4.10 and 4.44 is available with the Cummins and Aisin.
In the chassis cab, the standard fuel tank is bigger in the Ram than Ford, but the Ford can carry a second tank giving it more fuel capacity than Ram. Ram only offers this option on their longer wheelbase. Also note that Ram's maximum GVWR is only available in their longer wheelbase. You can get the maximum GVWR in Ford's short or long wheelbase frame.
