My F250 would drop the trailer display when the trailer is completely unplugged but signal "Check trailer" if the plug was not fully seated. My 5500 will show a disconnected trailer when unplugged or partially plugged and will not clear until the the plug is reseated or the ignition is cycled with the plug removed.
