Truck sufficient for what I want?

Im getting ready to make the plunge and buy a new trailer. It is listed as 33' long, weighs 6065 lbs with a 641 lb tongue weight. I will be towing it with a 2014 Ram 1500 Quad Cab 4x2 w/ the 5.7L HEMI, 3.21 rear end. Looking at the Ram towing capacities chart, I think Im going to be ok but want other opinions to make sure.

They list the max GCVW at 13,800 lbs. The curb weight of the truck with 2 passengers and no cargo is 5500 lbs, which shows I can tow up to
8350 lbs. I understand that would change if I loaded up the truck bed. So if I am reading this correctly, I have a little wiggle room. Max towing would be 8350, but the trailer is only 6065 lbs (unloaded). Last thing I want to do is buy a trailer too big to safely pull.

  • Being that the dry weight is 6065 & depending on how you load the trailer, your tongue weight could end up being as little as say 700 lbs or as much as 1000 lbs.

How does that compare to the "payload" capacity ? Don't forget to add the weight of the WDH to the equation.
  • Too much trailer, or not enough truck! Dry weights are pretty useless. Scale your loaded truck and then take a look at that trailers GVWR. Might be worst case, but would then have a fighting chance of real world numbers.
