We live in Florida & the summer heat destroys our tt tires. We keep them covered & don't drive over 65 mph, and yet, we blow tires every 2 years. We were advised by another RVer to use truck tires on the tt. Has anyone done this or do you have any recommendations?

Have not done it myself. I ran into a campground host this week that suggested truck tires. Until that moment, I would have never thought of that. He was one of the hosts at Florida Caverns State Park.

Doing a search, you will see a lot of LT vs ST tires discussions. Entertain yourself with them.

14"/15"/16" light truck and passenger tires were used for many years before the tire industry gave us the infamous ST tire. Trucks don't use 14" or 15" wheels anymore so all those sizes LT and big P tires we used are history. We have a fair selection of 16" LT tires up 3750 lbs for using on a trailer. I could find and make a list of LT or P tires but it would be easier if you could tell use what size/load range the OEM tires are on your trailer......or trailers axle ratings and its GVWR.

I modified the suspension on our small fifth wheel just so I could run 16" LT tires on it. You want to stick to ST or LT tires, and LTs only come in 16" and bigger. For 14" and 15" another option is to switch to better brands of ST tires--Maxxis is popular and that is what I use for 14" and 15" trailer needs. If possible it would be a good idea to increase the rating of the ST tire that you're using by going to a higher ply rating (such as switch from C to D) or a wider tire (215 to 225). Search for threads on tires--probably one of the top 3 topics. In fact this thread will probably explode just after everyone wakes up.

Truck tires and trailer tires are two different animals. The truck ones are not as strong in the sidewalls and the general method of building is different.The main problem with having a trailer just sit is they rot out from the inside as the need to move to lube the inside.

You can use LTs on a trailer if you like. Many people do.

But the facts are still the facts,
* ST tires were designed by the tire industry of use with trailers.
* The tire manufacturers would rather pass up tires sales, then recommend LTs for trailer use. (That alone should tell you something.)

But, as the saying goes, “If your mind is made up, do not let me confuse you with facts.”

Downwindtracker2 has a good approach. Take your static trailer gross weight when loaded (including weight on the hitch), divide by the number of tires, and add a 20% margin to get optimal tire load rating. This is pretty much as recommended by Carlisle tire in their "Trailer Tires: Tips & Best Practices" document. The resulting margin is sufficient to allow for the additional dynamic loading that the tires will have when the trailer leans on curves or in a crosswind. For comparison, the margin on my factory installed tires is ZERO if I load my trailer to the GVWR.

I think if you don't have a trailer of substantial weight you can do as you please. On a 30 or 40 footer better to use tires designed for that use.

My TT came new with LT, though a brand I've never heard of. I have 15" wheels but the dry weight of my TT is less than 3300 lbs. I have no problem finding LT tires.

The "weak sidewall" thing is a myth. Compare the two side by side. The LT tire will weigh a lot more, the sidewalls on the LT tire are WAY stiffer than the ST tire. The people that don't recommend LT tires have never used them. I've been running on them for over 5 years and many thousands of miles. If there is a downside, I sure don't know what it is.

I hear ya!
ST tires have about the same sidewall as a bicycle tire and only weigh about 15lb more than a bicycle tire.

Up front Cost. Long term much cheaper. I went with Michelins LT225/75x16 "E" 2680# each. That gives us full load 80% safety factor. I couldn't fit bigger tires on, they would bump into each other.

If trailer tires were car tires the year would 1930!! Or earlier!!

I live approx a half an hour drive from one of this Nations Largest RV shows here in Tampa. It's given me an opportunity to get a hands on feel for hundreds of different RV's. It no longer amazes me how many RV's are sold to people that don't have a clue what their getting into. Comments such as, just think, with this one we'll be able to take (so&so) hunting because he said this one's completely self contained, and its only going to be $250 a month .. We'll be able to pay that off in no time. A dozen times a day
I believe Up Grades become mandatory, more than they do anything else.

Pretty much impossible to guess wrong. The idea that you can upgrade should tell you that the components are not the best available. I find that the industry "designs" for the cheapest materials they can sell to an unsuspecting customer. Oh, and you are on your own anyway.
