There are lot of myths about duallies, but my first experience is that they don't use much more fuel than SRW.
My 2000 F250 with 7.3l was making 14mpg, my 2007 F350 DRW with 6l makes 16mpg.
Sure it is the engine that makes the difference, but loosing 1 mpg from 16 doesn't hurt much.
Even my SRW truck was holding the weight of the camper, I like to drive fast and just thinking what rear tire blow on SRW at 70mph can do to a camper standing 13' tall was giving me wet back.
