10 mpg = a good day towing. Our F150 CC gets around 17-18 around town and a bit better on the hwy, but hook up Rocky and down it goes.
That said, I would not let the mpg deter me from the camping experience. Look around and see what campgrounds are available within a few miles from home. We have 2 excellent TN State Parks, one 35 miles and one 45 miles from home. Those happen to be favorites and we tend to camp there much more often. We could also add 3 wonderful parks in MS, but they're around 125 + or - each way, which knocks us out of the 1 tank of gas goal. We can have just as much fun 35 miles from home as we can 125 miles and not spend more time and more $$ getting there. Do some investigating.
On our recent trip to Durango, CO, we never realized that the uphill grade starts just west of OKC....guess we thought it was much further. First gas stop after OKC, we were getting 8+mpg, UGH! The good news is that coming home we were getting 12+, so we were much happier. It all equals out.
Yes, the PUP will help out tremendously on the gas, but realize that there is more work getting loaded and ready, setting up and then unloading after the trip. We weren't interested in that at all, so bought a HTT and now our TT.
