I am glad you brought this up, I find these number interesting if not confusing.
The specs on my 2011 F-150 Eco-boost says, GVWR 7200 lbs. Max cargo 1411 lbs. that would mean the truck weights about 5800 lbs. It also says the Max loaded trailer weight of 9800 lbs. GCWR 15,400 lbs.
My trailer spec’s sticker says, UVW 4978 lbs. Base weight 5004 lbs. Max cargo 2722 lbs. GVWR 7700 lbs.
So when hitched at the curb I take the truck weight 5800 lbs. and the trailer weight at 5004 lbs. for a total of 10,804 lbs. Now I have to load the beast.
Short of weighting each item this is my best guess.
In the truck, two adults and dog 500 lbs. truck cap 250 lbs. tools etc. 100 lbs. for a total truck and load weight of 6,650 lbs.
In the trailer I have 25 gals. of fresh water for 200 lbs. clothes and bedding 150 lbs. propane 40 lbs. food 75 lbs. tools, jacks and camp gear 100 lbs. This gives me a total trailer and load weight of 5569 lbs.
So unless I am missing something, :@ I am moving 12,219 lbs. of steel and stuff down the road. Even if I am off by 1000 lbs. I am still well below the 15,400 lbs. GCWR.
How well this pulls is dependent on the horse power and I do not believe you can ever have too much of that. But my truck is not a dedicated vehicle, I use it for everyday driving.
