I think everyone's situation is going to be different, just as everyone's own towing performance/expectations are going to be different.
There will always be the two camps of "never exceed your trucks GVWR" and "it's okay to go over GVWR" with a bunch of other disclaimers for either choice mixed in.. ;)
There isn't a single human activity that you can do that does not have some sort of "risk" involved with it...
What one considers a 'risk' might not mean a thing to someone else.. I used to snow/water ski a lot when I was younger.. I don't do that anymore because MY risk level was reached at some point and it's no longer an enjoyable activity for ME.. Others will say I'm missing out and that's fine... If I'm not enjoying it anymore, why do it??
Kinda the same thing with towing... I tow what I tow because it's comfortable to me and my truck seems to be handling it fine too.. I've admitted to be over the trucks GVWR and have gotten flamed for doing so..
If the OP decided to get a higher capacity truck to replace one that he himself said was a "comfortable tow" that was his choice.
I see rigs on the road everyday that I shake my head at and wonder how they are getting down the road without imploding them and everyone else around them! :)
I questioned my getting a smaller and lighter TT back in 2002 when I saw 'others' towing much larger and heavier TT's when a lessor truck... I went to the scales and confirmed some things and while under every other rating, I'm over the trucks GVWR by a tad under 10% of the trucks GVWR, but I'm okay with it and with 255,000 miles total miles on the 1997 F150 and 11 years of towing the same TT with no issues, I'm a happy camper!
What seems to be the norm here is that someone will post up their combo and state this and that about the ratings and such and then hope to get "approval" from the masses on their setup.. That's fine and dandy, but you still can't expect someone else's experience to match yours and visa versa..
I did just see my latest 'dream' truck while getting a regular maintenance part from the local Ford dealer... A 2013 F150 SuperCab with #7500 GVWR and #2045 payload per the yellow sticker. It's got the 3.73 rear end and Egoboost engine and in XLT trim, which is all I'll ever need! Dang it all though... Still can't seem to make the numbers work for buying it right now, but I'm working on it! :)
