Lots of good info here. :) I would guess we all have the stories about over loading vehicle from time to time.
I have loaded over a ton of fertilizer in my ½ pick-up when necessary. My dad though nothing of taking the seat out of my brand new 60’s vintage Galaxy 500 Ford sedan and having me haul 1500 lbs. of spare ribs to the locker plant for storage. ;) Yes it can be done but in both cases it was a short haul at 35 mph with steering as soft as a marshmallow.
The right truck seems to be more of a matter of how safe you feel with the handling. Like beer, dogs and spouses everyone has their personal preferences and reasons for them. It is easy to judge pulling power and stopping distances but it is hard to put a handle on acceptable ride comfort and stability.
