F250s don't necessarily have the payload capacity everyone thinks it does. After going to a scale with our F250 (with just driver and full tank of gas) there's only 1800 lbs of available payload against versus the 2700 lbs the door pillar sticker says. I was quite surprised. It's because we have factory options - 4x4, super cab, 8' box and some smaller items, plus a 200-ish lb canopy. Still leaves us plenty after allowing for our TT tongue wt. If we had a 1/2T with the same options, I don't think there would much left for a TT.
We had a 2013 F150 Eco Boost crew cab, short bed FX4. It has 1,250 lb payload. Not a 3/4 ton by a long shot. After adding me and DW and a cooler, camera, etc. our payload was down to 650 lbs. Our TW is 920 lbs. We did the math.
We now have a 2014 F350 6.7 diesel crew cab, short bed, lariat with all the trimmings. It has all the same comfort goodies of our FX4 F150. Our payload is 3,500 lbs. With us in it, the truck weighs 8,400 lbs. (scale weight) Our GMWR is 11,500 lbs leaving us a nice 3,100 lbs for the TT and maybe an inflatable boat or some other fun stuff.
We loved the F150 and hated to trade it in. But numbers don't lie.
