Tundra and F150 questions

Compare MPG. My 2013 Tundra is very thirsty.

Not sure how the F150 stacks up, but we're pulling a similar TT with a Tundra. The truck does quite well with it - have been up & over mountain passes, etc. If the Tundra weighs significantly less than the F150, you might be happier with the latter in windy conditions. However, the Tundra has plenty of engine for this trailer. As someone else described it once, "more engine than truck," and I tend to agree. LOVE the 6-speed tranny & engine "braking". As to mpg, our truck gets about 8-9 mpg towing, on average; 15 mpg around town, 19 or so on the road when not towing.

You are wise to pay attention to the yellow payload sticker. The Toyota you looked at only leaves about 600 pounds for people and other cargo after you subtract tongue weight of your trailer.

Don't rule out the EcoBoost if you can find one. I'm one happy camper with mine. Pulls great, rides great, and mileage is great too. Towing at 60 mph, just a little over 10 mpg. Same speed on the highway with no trailer - 21-22 mpg. 72-74 mph drops it to about 18.5 mpg.

Have concerns about the longevity of a 6 cylinder turbo lasting a long time towing a 8000lb camper. My 2001 V8 towed it but was pretty much at the max and wth the EcoBoost I am losing 2 cylinders. I keep trucks for 10+ years and I don't have confidence that the V6 turbo will last. Wife shows me posts of people towing with the EcoBoost but I just don't know about it for the long run.

For towing only the maxium tow load capacity and GCWR are important. The GCWR is important as it includes consideration of the engine, drivetrain, brakes, frame, etc. for the total load of the truck, passengers, gear, and trailer.

I would subtract 10% from the maximum trailer rating for a gross trailer weight and subtract another 1,000 lbs. to allow for gear and water and other items in the trailer. What is left will be the weight to look for in a trailer in terms of its dry weight.

Less can be more with a lighter trailer and especially a shorter trailer that is easier to fit into campsites. With the trend toward smaller vehicles there are lots more lightweight trailers being built and many more choices available.

That may be the case now but it will be 10 years down the road at trade in time too. The Tundra will hold its value longer and work out the same in the end. Pay now, save later.

I tow a similar sized TT very happily with my Tundra but with the Crewmax version of either truck you will be pushing the limits payload wise. The only truck available in the 1/2 ton class with the higher rating would be the Ecoboost with the tow and payload package. If you don't like that option you'll be better off going with a 3/4 ton.

With that much trailer you will be pushing the envelope with either truck. Payload or the lack thereof will be your biggest challenge. You will be well over 1,000# of TW/WHD which leaves almost nothing you can load in the Tundra. Unless you get the max payload package the F-150 can easily suffer a similar fate. Also the Tundra will be, by far, the thirstier of the two. Good luck. :C

I don't know about everyone else, but I see very few Tundra's towing around her and the few that I do aren't pulling very heavy trailers. Fords are the most popular, Chevy/GMC next, and then Dodge. The only other "large" 1/2 ton trucks I see towing less then the Tundra's are the Nissans.

I'm biased, but I grew up around construction sites and there's a reason that Fords are the majority of trucks on construction sites. The bottom line IMHO is if you have work to do then get a Ford. If you want a truck that's going to live a long time doing it, get a Ford.

The bottom line is Ford sells more trucks for a reason. This review just confirmed what those of us that use our trucks day in and day out already know.
