That you don't need or want a tuner is fine however your newer gen diesel has much more power than the OP's older low power diesel with probably around 225-250 hp.
I don't have a PSD but I did put a Edge for towing which is a 40-50 hp/80-90 torque box on my then new '03 Dodge/Cummins 305/555 HO NV5600 3.73 axle with a 4" OEM exhaust and a Westach boost/EGT gage.
I added the box at around 5k miles and with 240k+ miles there has been no issues.
This Edge was a low performance box strictly for towing duties and really woke the Cummins up in the 1800-2100 rpm range. This box doesn't add smoke. If it did I wouldn't have it on my truck.
You make a good point , the DP tuner woke up my old 99 7.3 to a point, and was a pretty safe tuner with gauges, but here is the real world difference between a 99 ford 7.3 Powerstroke with exhaust, intake ,intercooler, and tuner upgrades , and a 2014 Ram 6.7 Cummins stock pulling the same fifth wheel on the same grade here in Utah. Ford 30-35 mph, Ram the speed limit 60 mph or faster if I wanted to. Is this all that important, no not really ,but is sure shows what the trucks have advanced to. Also with about the same mileage towing , but the Ram gets better mileage then the Ford running empty, and having nearly twice the power.
