Turn signal, brake light question

So all of a sudden my left turn signal and brake light stopped working. I had one blown bulb (1157 outer most bulb) and replaced it. The middle bulb looks fine. I pulled the cover off of the harness and red wire is tight. Checked the fuse in the camper and its good. I use an extension and did a continuity test on the red wire and it seems ok. Any ideas. Right side (brown wire) works fine.headed out next week and I'm sure I'll need to make a left sooner or later. ??
  • Follow up for anyone interested in the outcome. I put 12v to the red lead and the lights worked so not a camper issue either. I took the blue wire in the 10' extension harness (trailer brake) and swapped it with the red. Turn signals work so I'm assuming the red wire got pinched between the camper and the bed of the truck. I'll head up to Depot and get 10 feet of red wire and wire everything back the way it should be.

Sounds like you've verified the power lead, but have you verified you have a good ground to the bulb?
  • The truck is not the problem. I tested the plug in the bed of the truck and there is power there so I'm going to try replacing the red wire in the harness and see if that works. The fuse in the camper looks good but I will replace it too just to be sure.
  • My 96 F250 did the same thing- fuse block under the hood that I didn't know existed until that point and the guys at Truck Camper Warehouse pointed it out to me.
  • Okay, I re read the post more slowly. I understand now.

Again, does everything work on the truck?

Your problem points to a fuse, but the flasher solenoid could be stuck or burning out too.

Or, for some reason your truck doesn't have a heavy duty one, which would be a surprise because it's a one ton dually meant for heavy duty hauling and towing. Mine did though, and one day it started going out. A few days later, I had to manually flip the lever up and down to make a turn. They go out...
  • I'm sure a lot of people don't have this problem, but as a suggestion, I carry an extra heavy duty flasher relay. When those things start going out it can drive you nuts.

For your problem, do the flashers work on the truck, or did the bulbs burn out on the camper?

Look in the fuse box under the hood driver's side fender well for a separate fuse for trailer/camper connector.
Verify in the owner's manual if you have one. Some earlier Fords had them under the dash.

^^^^ This.. There are two fuse boxes; the one under the hood on your year truck has the trailer fuses in it. It's in the manual. I think the turn/brakes are in position F and G.
