The theory that older vehicles are harder on batteries is kind of arguable. For sure if there’s a particular issue with the vehicle, but in general, it’s not true.
Battery life? Do y’all remember back more than a few years? Do you actually get less battery life than 20 years ago or could it be luck of the draw? Hint...it’s luck of the draw combined with outside factors.
Reccomendations? Currently have a 5+ year old Napa battery in one car. Still cranking.
Have 2 pairs of Odyssey AGMs. One set is 10 years old , in the truck, still going. Other is 4or5 years old in the boat, still going. Camper batteries are 3 year old Duracells still going. 45 year old Jeep has a no name battery that’s about 5 years old, never maintained and starts the Jeep about 5x a year.
For comparison sake, I had a couple Optimas around 15 years ago. A couple turned into 7 or 8 with warranty claims and none of them lasted more than 12-24 months, except the one I placed in the old Jeep from the boat when I needed a battery in the wintertime. It lasted the better part of 10 years.
My scientific analysis = Odyssey is best, everything else is fine, Optima is junk.
