No doubt it is just speculation as of date. It has been confirmed that the 6.2L will be replaced in the next 4 years by Reuters in an article about the new engine plants labor deal.
If this 4.8L is an iron block or CGI and turbocharged, then it is definitely a viable option and just about the right size to handily outperform the 6.2L in the SD. Or any other 3/4 or 1 ton gas engine for that matter.
